My name is Shaun Moir, and I’m the Sales and Marketing Manager at Formation Plastics. I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and explain the work we’re doing in the field of HDPE canal boats.
Our first successful project was a widebeam canal boat, which incorporated a mix of HDPE and steel. While this was a successful prototype, we are now progressing to a more ambitious project: a 57’ narrowboat, which will be constructed entirely from HDPE, with no steel components at all. We believe this will demonstrate the full potential of HDPE as a primary material for boatbuilding.
We’ve chosen to pair this innovative boat design with the Vetus E-pod system for propulsion, an electric power solution that aligns with our vision of creating more sustainable boating options. The combination of HDPE and electric power offers a lightweight, durable, and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional steel and fuel-powered boats.
While we understand that HDPE canal boats may not appeal to everyone, we are confident that this new design has much to offer for those seeking an innovative and sustainable approach to boating. The benefits of HDPE, including its resistance to corrosion, ease of maintenance, and longevity, make it an exciting option for the future of narrowboat construction.
We will be showcasing our new 57’ narrowboat at the Crick Boat Show in 2025, and we’d love for you to come by, see the boat in person, and learn more about the unique features of HDPE canal boats. We also have a growing library of videos documenting our journey and showcasing our work on YouTube,
If you have any questions or would like more information about HDPE boatbuilding, feel free to reach out. We are always happy to discuss the potential of this material and how it could shape the future of canal boating.
